According to (Gross, 2020), it's the Styles' fans who attempt to politicize him from the base point of their identification, and to mobilize his image for their own political endeavours, one such as Black Lives Matter, where fans attempt to reshape and use Harry Style's image by bring BLM signs and flags to his concerts, wanting him to acknowledge and recognise by actually saying that he supports the movement. The findings of this project reviews the evidence for Styles fashion choices and his sexuality and how his Met Gala 2019 outfit challenged a lot of stubborn preconceptions about 'who gets to wear what' (Joyce Banks, 2021).
Readers may also need to undertake further research in order to better understand Harry Styles political views and fashion choices, which supports the influence he has on his fans.
As explored by (Gross, 2020), a black fan passed out nearly 400 Black Lives Matter signs to the crowd to gain Styles attention during the show, in which they were unsuccessful. This not-acknowledging publicly on stage during the show got fans expressing their disappointment after the gig. Fans referred to Styles' behaviour on stage before of waving LGBTQ+ flags and showing that he supports and care about them and the problems they go through, and wanted something like this toward BLM as well. Eight months later, Styles finally waved a BLM flag and said “Thank you for your Black Lives Matter signs”. Later, stickers of BLM were seen on Styles electronic guitar alongside a sticker against gun violence and pride flag.
Although Styles is always a bit hesitant on speaking publicly about his views, or even his personal life, fans have constantly tried to make his concerts a political space, rather than having fun solely because of his music. I argue that even though fans identify with Style's values and him supporting socio-political movements, like LGBTQ+ and charity initiatives, they just expect him to do more and acknowledge BLM on stage to make Black people safe and loved in his shows. This also reflects something that (Gross, 2020) states in their research, that by bringing BLM signs and flags to concerts, fans not only are attempting to reshape/use Harry Styles' image for their own representation but are playing a direct role in developing his political meaning.
(ii) Styles' fashion choice and its influence Harry Styles is known as one of the top male pop icons to set trends in fashion industry with his unique sense of style, such as feminine fabrics and colours, velvet flares, faux-leather suits and what not. Let's explore one of his outfits and how it started a political discussion about gendered fashion.
According to (Joyce Banks, 2021), Harry Styles wearing a sheer blouse and pearl earring while co-hosting the Met Gala in New York in 2019 (as represented in Figure 2), challenged a lot of stubborn preconceptions about 'who gets to wear what' and started this popular perception that Styles is bisexual.
I argue that it is great that Styles is spreading awareness to people about gender-fluid clothing and how clothes don't define your sexuality and saying “who cares?” and “It just looks cool” when being asked just because of his clothing. This is something that should be normalised by now and men and women should be able to wear what they want and there shouldn't be any lines between what's for men and what's for women. As long as an individual wearing something is cool with it, no has a right to go against, or speak badly about them. It's amazing to see the shift, especially in lockdown when people are trying new things and isn't afraid to try and experience new looks and clothes.
